Your Body Needs Nutrients: How To Fine Tune Your Machine

by: Jennifer Burks, APRN, CNM

Sometimes with everything we have to do in life, it’s hard to take care of our bodies the right way. A few late night take-out meals, one too many cocktails, and not enough water can lead to a not so great feeling inside. So how can you tell if your body’s nutrient starved? You can find out if you are getting all the nutrients you need by taking an honest look at your diet, and asking yourself a few questions such as:

Are You Hungry Between Meals?

This tells you whether you are eating a satisfying enough meal with plenty of fiber to keep you full long enough to make it to the next meal. If you find that your meals aren’t providing you with enough nutrients, then you might need to add a high protein or fiber rich snack. Some good examples of this are a handful of almonds, or half an apple with a tablespoon of almond butter.

Do You Snack Constantly?

Another problems is too many snacks with little fuel, for example if you are hitting your office vending machine a few times a day for empty calories. Take the time to pack yourself a hearty, filling lunch that will give you enough energy to make it through the day.

Do You Crave Sweets?

This is a great one to ask yourself, because too many people have a high sugar diet and they don’t even know it. Check the label on that greek yogurt you eat every morning. You might be surprised at just how much sugar it contains. Or that mid-afternoon Frappuccino is a sugar bomb that isn’t doing your body any favors. The more sugar you eat, the more you end up craving it. So look for hidden amounts in your diet to get rid of excess sugar cravings.

How Is Your Skin?

The way your outside layer responds to your diet is a tell tale sign of how well you are getting your nutrients. If your skin is dry, flaky, and rough it might be time to up your nutrient intake. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, simple H20, and loaded with vegetables is going to make your skin and hair the best it can be. Healthy and radiant.

Do You Have Low Energy or Joint Pain?

Another good indicator of nutrient starvation is low energy, achiness, or joint pain. If you are dragging yourself out of bed each morning, and barely making it through the day without a nap then you need to reboot your lifestyle with a better diet for your entire body that includes a variety of superfoods.
